A dazed stag braces itself against the onslaught of a large panther that grasps its head and bites forcefully into the back of its neck. The stag appears with frequency in the artist's sculpture both by itself and in dramatic compositions such as this example. Extant preliminary studies by Barye of the preserved skeleton of a stag note measurements and the delicate structure of the animal's legs, skull, and antlers.
