This landscape, painted during the artist’s first extended stay in the French countryside, has been identified as a view of La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire, a town in the environs of Paris. Although still reminiscent of the Naturalism of the Barbizon school, the landscape also anticipates Impressionism in its attention to light and atmosphere. Born on St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies, Pissarro arrived in Paris in 1855 and soon developed associations with Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, and Charles-François Daubigny, all of whom would influence his early work.
