This Proverncal landscape, done later in Derain's career, is conceived in naturalistic colors rather than the bright Fauve tones for which the artist is so well known. Derain depicted a stream in the foreground flowing out of the rocky ground, which recedes toward lighter areas of open space. The running water is portrayed with wide brushstrokes of paint. Bright highlights show the reflection of light off surfaces and define the details of the rocks. Dark green bushes and trees fill the right edge, with mountains of brown, purple, and blue tones in the distance and a bright blue sky with beige, clouds above.
