Although Lucas' inscribed this impression as first state, most likely due to the lack of lettering, this impression is the "false pre-lettering state" as described by Melot and is easily identified due to the vertical line/scratch on the left side of the image and the lack of stray marks below the lower right frame line, which are indicative of the first state.
