Object Number 2002.200
A rectangular panel of watered warp-faced cream or off-white silk embroidered with the figure of a peacock and limited foliage. The peacock balances on a branch at the bottom of the image. He faces a group of tall flowering vines to the viewer's left. His tail swings down and then up to the right, disappearing outside of a narrow (1') embroidered border located approximately 3/4' within the visible edges of the piece before re-entering the field at the upper right. This border consists of three parts, including two narrow multicolored stripes outlined in metallic thread, and a middle stripe in which a small section of the 'eye' of the peacock feather is repeated at intervals throughout. The embroidery is worked in silk threads in many colors, originally quite bright including a bright blue, but now faded to grey, white, yellow, dark brown, medium brown, medium grey-blue, burnt orange, beige, off-white, taupe, rose, red, coral, medium green, and yellow-green. (See conservation report). Metallic-wrapped threads are also used. Stitches include stem, encroaching satin, split, knotted, and laid and couched. The effect is a very painterly blending of shades. When originally accessioned by the Museum, it was framed in a narrow gilded wooden frame with incised and painted decoration, which was not original (per our frame expert James Brewster). The needlework has been reframed in a hand carved gilded frame.

Inscribed: Label from Purnell Art Company on reverse of frame. (Removed during conservation and frame replacement.) Printed on the acidic board backing behind the embroidery: "MAY 1943" This probably indicates the date the embroidery was framed by Purnell.
