Skilled bookbinders applied many layers of varnish on top of paper and paste to construct protective covers, decorative boxes, or pen cases. Boxes such as this held an inkwell, pens, a small spoon for adding water to the ink, a pair of scissors for trimming paper, and a stone to shape and sharpen pen tips.
