This work by the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix was once in the collection of Leo Stein, and it would have been very familiar to Etta Cone when she purchased it in 1937. Along with his sister Gertrude, Leo Stein was an important collector of modern European art in the first years of the twentieth century, and many artists and collectors flocked to the Steins' apartment in Paris to see their works. It has been suggested that the enchained figure of Andromeda in this work my have inspired their friend Henri Matisse to produce some of his early sculptures of female nudes, including "Seated Nude with Arms on Head" (BMA 1950.207).
