Phaeton also flew through the heavens, but did so by driving the chariot of his father, the sun god Apollo. After his father reluctantly let him take the reins of the four fiery steeds that pulled the chariot, he enjoyed a brief, exhilarating flight. However, he could not control the horses, who dragged the sun chariot so near the earth that it caught on fire. Jupiter, king of the gods, stopped the destruction by hurling a thunderbolt at the chariot.
