Made in China for export to the West, these footed urns with distinctive handles replicate a classical Greek funerary urn. The form was first revived by the Italian printmaker and draughtsman Stefano della Bella (1610-1664) for Ferdinand de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. During the 18th century, Chinese export examples of the ancient form (doubtless based on print sources) were popular with Swedish customers. They eventually found favor with American buyers during the Federal period.
