In this working drawing, Matisse adapts his reclining figure, carefully modelled with short, diagonal hatch marks. He plays with her pose and the curve of her shoulders while adjusting her orientation to the blank page, raising her up towards the top margin through a series of erasures. He includes an additional sketch showing Herodias sleeping, as if imagining a moment prior to the opening of the poem, when the titular character has yet to be awakened from her slumber.
