This depiction of the artist’s wife, Amélie, (1872–1958) is thought to be one of the first works produced in this group of etchings. Matisse focused most of his attention on her hairstyle and facial features, choosing not to depict the sides of her face. The quick and improvisational aspects of the etching process provided Matisse with a break from the rigors of his painting practice, which often took enormous effort over the course of extended periods of time.
