This sober Dutch portrait depicts an unidentified man standing proudly beside a table, where he has placed his hat. His elegant black clothes and reserved appearance suggest that he is a merchant, as does the inclusion of the print showing a Dutch commercial vessel, closely modeled on 16th-century examples, in the foreground. The growth of the Dutch economy in the early decades of the 17th century created a burgeoning upper-middle class composed largely of merchants. The wealth behind such figures often provided the capital to drain and reclaim large areas of land from the sea, demonstrating the closely intertwined links between Dutch exploits at home and abroad.
