From a series of portraits made for Esnauts and Rapilly. Louis (1723-1792) was a French military surgeon and Secretary of the Royal Academy of Surgery. Contributed articles on surgery to Diderot's Encyclopedia. One of the designers of the guillotine, which was first called a "louisette" or "louison."
