This magnificent etching of the French writer Charles Paul de Kock (1794-1871) relates to John Sloan's portrait drawing of the sitter that The Baltimore Museum of Art acquired in 1936. Both Sloan and William Glackens (1870-1938) were approached by the Frederick J. Quinby Company of Boston to illustrate de Kock's work; this series of 50 volumes was sold on a limited edition, subscription basis in the early part of the 20th century. Sloan was also commissioned to create a portrait of the author, although the print was not used in any of the publications. Sloan notes on the print at lower center that it was drawn "from various contemporary sources," but the primary model seems to have been a photograph by Bertall et Cie.
