Gaspard (or Caspar) Bauhin (1560-1624) was a Swiss botanist who wrote Phytopinax (1596), and Pinax theatri botanici (Illustrated exposition of plants, not published until 1623), a landmark of botanical history. He also published a major work on anatomy, Theatrum Anatomicum infinitis locis auctum (1592) to which this print belonged. See BM O,6.53 where it is cataloged as the frontispiece to Theatrum Anatomicum and dated 1605.
