Gaspard de Coligny, Seigneur de Châtillon (16 February 1519– 24 August 1572) was a French nobleman and admiral, best remembered as a disciplined Huguenot leader in the French Wars of Religion and a close friend and advisor to King Charles IX of France. He was killed in the St Bartholomew Day's Massacre, which is depicted at the bottom of the print. See BM 1841,0612.42
