This small pen and ink drawing by Édouard Manet depicts the writer and publicist Henri Vigneau. In 1870, Vigneau and the novelist Emile Zola seconded Manet during his infamous duel with the critic Edmond Duranty, who had infuriated the painter with an unfavorable review. Eventually, Vigneau, too, fell out of favor with Manet, after he was
spotted with Duranty at a Paris café. This sympathetic portrait, however, remains a poignant testament to their once intimate friendship. It was later owned by Edgar Degas, a great admirer of Manet.
