After the painting by Ferdinand Bol in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, inv.no.610 (with slight variations such as omitting the feathers in the woman's hair); the painting was previously attributed to Rembrandt. The sitter has been identified as the wife of the painter Govert Flinck. This print is from a series of nine plates after Rembrandt paintings, "La Galerie Electorale de Düsseldorf" (Basel: 1778), all etched by Hess after paintings then in the collection of the Elector Palatine Karl Theodor in Düsseldorf. Most of these paintings are now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.
There are four prints in the Garrett Collection from the series: 1946.112.2190, 1946.112.2191, 1946.112.2192, 1946.112.2193.
On Hess's etchings after Rembrandt, see Thomas W. Gaehtgens and Louis Marchesano, Display and Art History: The Düsseldorf Gallery and its Catalogue (Los Angeles: Getty Research Institute, 2011), pp. 70-74.
