Credit Line Gift of the Family of Ferdinand C. Latrobe III, Baltimore
Object Number 2014.47
The Baltimore firm Samuel Kirk and Sons made this silver punch bowl, topped with a miniature model of Calvert Street Bridge, to celebrate the bridge’s completion in 1880. Though it has since been demolished, the bridge spanned Jones Falls, an 18-mile-long stream that both supplied Baltimore with fresh water and powered flour, canvas, and rope factories along its shores. In the 1960s, five miles of the waterway was covered by the newly constructed I-83 highway, which still runs nearby to the Baltimore Museum of Art. Although the stream continues to flow under the highway and to the harbor, it is highly contaminated with bacteria, fecal matter, and metallic and plastic runoff. Local environmental groups like Blue Water Baltimore actively monitor these pollutants and advocate making Baltimore’s water cleaner and safer for all residents.
