Here Manet uses quick, loose brushwork, influenced by Japanese prints, to create a spontaneous, expressive image. This raven in flight appeared on a page reserved for a bookplate, where the owner of The Raven might place his or her name. This copy is inscribed, in French, to the newspaper New York Herald, from the artist and Mallarmé.
