Henri Matisse

Reclining Nude III

1928

Physical Qualities Bronze, 7 3/8 x 18 1/2 x 5 13/16 in. (18.7 x 47 x 14.8 cm.)
Credit Line The Cone Collection, formed by Dr. Claribel Cone and Miss Etta Cone of Baltimore, Maryland
Object Number 1950.437
The last of Matisse’s four reclining nude sculptures, Reclining Nude III is larger and more voluptuous than the previous examples seen nearby. After two decades, the relaxed pose moved further toward simplification. Matisse made this work as smooth as possible, eliminating all traces of toolmarks and keeping the torso sleek from shoulder to hips.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest, 1949; Etta Cone, Baltimore, by purchase from the artist, 1929, Paris
