Born on the northern coast of France, L’Huillier painted scenes
from daily life in the Norman countryside. While a professor at the
École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, he counted among his pupils,
20th-century artists Raoul Dufy, Othon Friesz, and Georges Braque,
each of whom he encouraged to pursue their artistic studies in Paris.
Lucas’s interest in L’Huillier dated from the 1860s, and his Diary
indicates that he purchased this work, “my sketch of horses,” from a
Paris dealer, Merchez, on March 4, 1869.
