Not Vital is best known as a sculptor who integrates forms, materials, and subjects from many cultures into his work. In this book, Not Vital chose to focus on the culture of his native Switzerland by pairing his imagery with three poems by Pier Pasolini, Luisa Famos, and Andri Peer written in Rhaeto-Romansh, the national language of Switzerland and the valley region of Ingardin, Not Vital’s home. The pages in this book were custom-made from the pulp of cedar bark, their rich brown color and coarse texture serving as a tribute to Not Vital’s father, who was a wood merchant. The environment of Not Vital’s homeland is further reflected in his augmentation of these pages with unexpected materials, including the sawblade you see before you.
