These examples of Goryeo dynasty (982–1392) celadon stoneware are
characterized by a soft, subtle color and extremely delicate decoration.
The dish on the left, its rim notched to suggest a flower’s outline, has a
barely visible low-relief molded flower scroll around the inner side. The
undecorated small dish, which could also have been used as a calligrapher’s
brush washer, is not entirely round. The cup stand (shown without a cup)
has three finely incised flower motifs on the wide collar and a squared
spiral encircling the rim. Such decorative details were intended for the
pleasure of the user. Korea’s kilns, influenced by both Chinese southern
and northern green-glazed wares, produced fine celadon from the 11th
through the end of the 14th century.
