Villet claims that this print was prepared as a frontispiece for the Société de Peintres-Gravures series “L’Illustration nouvelle” in 1868, but not used; rather, a print by Bracquemond was published as the frontispiece. The online version of this series from the Bibliothèque nationale (Gallica), includes a variant state of this image with a printed title in the upper margin. It seems probable that this print was issued as a prospectus for the series, as it includes information about the pricing and edition in the lower margin.

through Henry Walters, Baltimore, by bequest 1909; from George A. Lucas, Paris
