The various cloud formations, receding mountains, and monochromatic palette all suggest the remote and mystical Sacred Fountain in the the semi-autonomous kingdom of Ryuku (present-day Okinawa), a group of islands far to the south not incorporated into Japan until 1895. A visit of two hundred Ryukuans to the Shogunate in Edo in the eleventh month of 1832 excited much interest on teh part of resident, and certainly prompted the publication of this eight-print series.
