Unlike the adjacent print [Mellan], which shows the moment after the image of Christ’s face has been transferred to Veronica’s handkerchief, this engraving by Jacob Matham depicts Saint Veronica as a devotional figure, elegantly displaying her sudarium. It is one of several prints with Catholic themes that Matham published around this time. Although Calvinism was declared the official religion of the United Provinces (in present-day Holland) in the late sixteenth century, many remained Catholic and worshipped in private, including Matham and Abraham Bloemaert. With prints such as Saint Veronica with the Sudarium, Matham appealed to both the local Catholic community and to foreign markets.
