Rectangular sampler featuring alphabet, numbers, birds, baskets, and dog motifs as well as prayer and inscriptions. The work is composed of a plain-woven lt. brown linen ground embroidered in multicolored silk threads including green, lt. olive green, pink, creamy white, gold, blue, black, and brown.
The top portion of the sampler includes alphabets in upper and lower cases, and a numerical series worked in black threads. Some of the numbers and many lower case letters have worn away:
5/8' letters and numbers: 'ABCDEFGHIJK/ LMNOPQRSTUV/ WXYZ12345 [6]7/8 9 10 [abcdef]ghi[jk]lm/[n]o[p]q[rstuvwxy]z' The center of the sampler features a floral basket flanked by flowers with birds perched on the leaves. The inscription 'E Childs Preceptress' worked in black silk in 5/8' upper and lower case script letters flanks the basket. Below this a 2' x 4-1/2' field of cream white outlined in pink is reserved for another inscription also worked in black silk in 5/8' upper and lower case letters which gives the maker's name, birth date, and date of the sampler: 'Lorinda Morris/ born August 29/ 1798 Deerfield 1807'. This field is flanked by two floral baskets. The bottom third of the sampler contains a prayer worked in black silk in 5/8' upper and lower case script letters: 'May i be/ Bless'd by thee/ O God of love/ In worlds above' This inscription is flanked on the right with a basket of flowers and a bird, and on the left with two black dogs. The sampler is bordered on three sides with a 1-3/4' stylized strawberry vine motif. The bottom border is a narrow (1/4') quilloche or chain-like motif worked in three colors of silk. The sampler appears to have a selvage on the top edge. The right edge appears to be bound with whip stitching, the left and bottom edges appear to have been cut and left unfinished. The sampler is framed in narrow wood-grained veneer.
