Portrait of Samuel Owings Hoffman by Henry Inman, 1833. Oil on canvas. Samuel Owings Hoffman (1801-1860) is the son of Peter Hoffman, Jr. (III) (1774-1837) and wife Deborah Owings Hoffman (1777-1855) (m. 1799). He married Louis Airey Gilmor (1804-1879), the daughter of William Gilmor of Baltimore and his wife, Marianne Smith Drysdale, on May 9, 1826. He was a businessman, a merchant, and a political figure who was well-respected citizen of Baltimore. Here, Samuel wears a black coat and cravat over a cream-colored vest. He sits in an armless chair covered with red upholstery fabric.
