Having seen ancient Roman, Syrian, and Medieval European glass on his youthful travels, Louis Comfort Tiffany eventually developed Favrile glass, which he patented in 1894. Unlike other iridescent glass techniques, which coated the surface of an object with fumes from heated metallic salts, Tiffany’s colors were imbedded in the glass matrix for a rich antique effect. A lady of fashion would have used this vinaigrette to carry smelling salts with her in case she felt faint.
