In 1908, Bonnard moved away from his earlier style toward a more impressionistic and atmospheric feeling for light and nature. At this time he focused his attention on the subject of the female nude, which was to remain a central motif throughout his late work. The female figure, probably his wife Marthe, is seemingly unaware of the viewer, caught in a quiet moment. Shimmering light fills the room, and Bonnard’s exploration of color and atmosphere are seen at their finest.
