In both drawing and print , we witness Matisse’s ability to make observations and then almost instantaneously draw a synthesized image. He did this over and over again, confirming an extraordinary coordination between eye and hand. This ability to introduce increasing economy in his portrayal of the model is especially evident in the lithographs of 1913 and related drawings.
In this spare composition Matisse’s linear drawing style is at its most elegant. He crafted a graceful harmony from the sinuous curves of the woman’s hair, shoulders, waist, and buttocks. Distilling his observations into a minimum of mostly unconnected lines, the artist gave his design a delicate, weightless quality
