This circular work is from a series of twelve prints representing activities associated with each month of the year and feature the corresponding Zodiac symbols. The engraving for September depicts apple harvesting.
Depictions of visual abundance and daily life, including market and harvest scenes, became popular subject matter in European art of the 16th and 17th centuries. Collectors preferred these visual representations of abundance and prosperity because they offered highly detailed depictions of everyday life. In this gallery, a painting by Louise Moillon offers a view of a French market stall.
