Shadow puppets are popular across Asia. Many puppet plays are rooted in ancient Hindu stories. Javanese wayang kulit (flat puppets) like this one are operated by performers behind a white cloth with light projected against them so the audience experiences a story through shadows and music. Wayang kulit are made from water buffalo hide that has been cut and punctured by hand using specific tools tapped with a mallet.
