Distinguished by fine proportions, this pair of Baltimore side chairs has a history of Maryland ownership. The chairs were probably purchased by Samuel Chase, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, when he moved from Annapolis to Baltimore. Beautifully executed inlays include a conch shell centering each back, and strings of characteristic Baltimore bellflower drops, their elongated petals suspended from small oval inlaid loops.
