In July 1826, schoolgirl Sophronia Pickrell won the Senior Class Premium Prize for her studies in “History, Philosophy, Chemistry, Astronomy, Harp, and Piano.” She attended the female academy run by the Sisters of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Georgetown, now a part of Washington, D.C. Pickrell, the original owner of this elegant instrument with its neoclassical gilt ornament, was awarded a rose gold medal inscribed with her accomplishments.
