On September 16, 1865, Lucas noted: “At Ziem’s who showed me the two Venices which he is to present to me.” It is likely that the artist’s generosity was the result of numerous sales of his works made through Lucas in the 1860s to American clients including William Walters of Baltimore. A frequent traveler, Ziem recorded views of the locales he visited in compositions that focus on light and atmospheric effects. However, he is most closely associated with the city of Venice, to which he returned repeatedly throughout his career.
