Here, the figure’s face is delicately depicted, whereas her legs and feet have a more monumental feel, as often seen in Greek and Roman sculpture. The model is posed before a decorative screen, which is carefully delineated with florets and curves in the background. Matisse’s interest in artistic practices from North Africa and Asia can be seen in many of his compositions, as he was a devoted collector of works of art from those cultures.
