Slit gongs were, and are, important instruments in the Sepik River area. They were beaten during ceremonies and dances, and to transmit messages. In ceremonies, drumbeats impersonated the voices of the spirits. When used to transmit messages, patterns of drumbeats have specific meanings. Messages include notices of death, war, or invitations to feasts.
