This glaze imitates the glaze of a Song dynasty tribute ware. The crackled pattern, deliberately planned to enhance the appearance of the vase, was caused by differing rates of contraction as the body and glaze cooled. Other decorative techniques used by Song kilns included underglaze carved or impressed designs, layered contrasting glazes, carved slip glazes, or reserved designs. Fance Franck utilized some of these same devices on nearby works.
