Physical Qualities Carved agate encrusted with carved quartz, enamel and lacquer; gold mounts, 2 x 3 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. (5.1 x 8.3 x 9.5 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Mrs. Bennett Darnall
Object Number 1966.14.8
This European footed cup and snuffbox are made of agate, a mineral known for its colorful bands. Agate is mined across Europe. The works were shaped by a lapidarist, a specialist in cutting, grinding, and polishing stone. The transformation of stones into precious objects reflects an intertwined interest in art and the natural sciences during the 18th century. This snuffbox, used for holding powdered tobacco, is decorated with numerous stones that the owner likely appreciated for their naturally occurring colors and patterning.
