Working from an 1864 photograph, Ramsess quilts a portrait of the abolitionist and women’s rights activist Sojourner Truth in brilliant hues and intricate patterns. Ramsess is a self-taught, multimedia artist and educator based in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Using such diverse materials as tile, stained glass, or textile, he portrays figures whose legacies have been overlooked or distorted in American history. This quilt was acquired from the solo exhibition Ramsess: The Gathering, co-organized by the BMA and Art + Practice (A+P), an art and social service organization in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, created by artist Mark Bradford, whose work hangs nearby. The BMA began its partnership with A+P in 2017 as part of its ongoing commitment to engage artist communities, such as those who are self-taught and all too often ignored by art museums and markets.
