In this delicate and evocative drawing, Vuillard was able to capture the unique atmosphere of a kitchen in a sewing factory. Vuillard’s family was in the textile business, and as usual, he chose to depict a familiar place from his own experience. The light-filled interiors of his many seamstresses’ shops have been replaced by this darker working environment. The steam rises from the soup that is being served, adding to the gloomy mood.
