The dark and dusky surface of this mask implies that it was meant to embody a fierce spirit. Likewise, the two antelope horns that rise above its head refer to male aggression in the animal kingdom. The even, elegant arc of the horns, however, in combination with the graceful curves of the mask’s cheeks, lips, and eyes suggest an almost feminine delicacy. Perhaps this mask was intended to draw upon the spiritual power of both genders. Most likely of a mask genre known as karikpo, this mask would have performed acrobatically to honor deceased community leaders and promote the growth of crops.
