An innovation of the 18th century, transmutation or flambé glazes were different from other red glazes because they contained some lead-oxide as well as copper. In a further development, the appearance and placement of blue was obtained by adding cobalt to the glaze. Jun Red became the predominant type of Chinese red-glazed porcelain during the course of the 19th century.
