Cornelius & Baker, a Philadelphia firm, made not only elaborate lamps but also metal parlor sculptures. In this pair of objects, the owner got both. The lamps originally graced Belvidere, the house built in Baltimore by John Eager Howard (1725 – 1827). They were probably ordered by his son, Benjamin Chew Howard (1791 – 1872), a prominent Maryland legislator.
