Cornelius & Baker, a Philadelphia firm, made not only elaborate lamps but also metal parlor sculptures. In this object, one of a pair, the owner got both. The lamps originally graced Belvidere, the house built in Baltimore by John Eager Howard (1725 1827). They were probably ordered by his son, Benjamin Chew Howard (1791 1872), a prominent Maryland legislator.
