Cornelius de Beet began to advertise in the Baltimore City Directories in 1810. His name appeared regularly through 1840, not only in the directories, but also in newspaper accounts. He was identified variously as an ornamental, landscape, and fancy painter. This particular image combines landscape with still life. De Beet exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1812 to 1832. He also participated in the First Annual Exhibition at the Peale Museum in Baltimore in 1822. De Beet is buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore.
