A painter of portrait groups and romantic compositions inspired by the music of his era, Fantin-Latour is also known for his still lifes. This early example, in its elegant simplicity and intimacy, recalls the work of the great 18th century French practitioner of the genre, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. Later in life, Fantin-Latour would paint exquisite floral arrangements that brought him considerable success in England, due, in part, to the efforts of his close friend, James Abbott McNeill Whistler.
