This work, with its graceful curves, subtle muted color, and textural effects, is typical of the compositions which brought the artist recognition. Georges Braque was a French modern painter who, together with Pablo Picasso, developed the radical pictorial language of Cubism, shaping the course of 20th-century painting. Following World War I (1914-1918), in which Braque was seriously wounded, his style radically changed, becoming less abstract as he introduced a distinct realism to much of his production, which now focused on still life.
